warmer temperatures. tony, allison, back up to you. >> thank you very much. developing this morning, the world of country music continues to mourn the loss of mindy mccready. >> the singer died sunday apparently taking her own life. wisdom martin joins us with more on this tragic story. >> the singer hit the top of the country charts with hits like guys do it all the time and then 10,000 angels. sadly in recent years, personal problems side tracked her career. and yesterday police say she committed suicide with a self inflicted gunshot. she attempted suicide three times since 2005. battled drug abuse. she was also engaged in a bitter custody battle for her older son with her mother who is the primary guard dwran. her body was found on the porch yesterday afternoon. just weeks ago, her

long time boyfriend committed suicide at the same home. the entertainment world has taken to twitter to offer condole answers. very sad to hear about mindy mccready. when i was in loan star, she was our label mate and we were friends. tragic end to a talented life. american idol alum carrie underwood saying i grew up to listening to mindy mccready. so sad for her family. many prayers are going out to them. she leaves behind two young sons ages 6 years and 10 months. tony and allison, back to you. >> fire officials in the district continue to investigate the cause of the fire at a home in southeast. flames ripped through the home on 33rd street around 3:00 on sunday morning. a 4 year old girl remains in critical condition. the home's owner 46-year-old jeremy calvary lewis is charged with felony threats. he made threats against one of the women living

at the home while crews worked to put out the flame. the search is on for the driver who hit and killed a person. 20-year-old darnell ross was hit around 10:30 saturday night in the 100 block of m street northeast. police say he somehow fell into the road and was struck. investigators hope to hear from witnesses who may have seen what happened. >> making headlines around the world, oscar pistorius's track career will be sidelined indefinitely. the south african olympian's agent says he's been forced to dancele races. reeva steenkamp was shot several times on valentine's day. her funeral and bond hearing will be held tomorrow. the police investigation is focused on a bloody cricket bat found in his

the debt ceiling. then to find $1.2 trillion over 10 years. nondefense agencies will have to tighten spending by 9%. defense spending will take 13% hit for this fiscal year. some say the affects of the cuts are being exaggerated and some republicans have split opinions. >> there are many ways to do this but the president promised it wouldn't happen. he's the commander-in-chief. and on his watch, we're going to begin to unravel the finest military in the history of the world. >> the pentagon needs a thorough overhaul. i'm a hawk but i'm a cheap hawk. f 35 overrun problem, it is obscene and disgrace full and people will be demanding we fix the system. >> some federal watchers are saying the government agencies are putting out these outrageous cuts, these outrageous worst

florida. it does appear cold down there. how are the boys of summer handling this spring? >> yeah, i know we're not going to get pity from you guys back home. it was chilly. it's been chilly. today it's starting to warmup. yesterday the first fall squad workout dipped down into the 40s and the wind was ripping around. cinched over their mouths. it was not the way you expect spring training to begin. but everybody certainly in good spirits. >> scott, let me ask you this. the first year when frank robinson was the manager, i asked him what do you guys do. and he basically made the appearance, they don't do a whole lot in spring training. what do you seen over the weekend? what have they been doing to get ready to get back into baseball

mode? >> their facility has several fields kind of in a circuit. guys will move from station to station. first couple days working on coming off the hill and throwing the first. or working on their move over to first base and keeping runners on. since players arrived yesterday, a lot taking in field. taking batting practice as well yesterday. not a whole lot but they do move station to station. batting practice was fun to watch yesterday. the ball was flying off the bat for several guys. probably put ian desmond. brice harper was crushing it yesterday. he probably hit half a dozen home runs. gathered in the out field once brice came. the guys looked good. in good spirits and i'm excited to see today's batting practice when it's

warmed up. everybody was hitting yesterday with sweatshirts on. maybe the ball flies a little further. >> i know you talked to a couple guys one on one over the weekend. let's start off with steven strassburg first. i know it was a sore subject. but on the heels of rgiii where he gets hurt and people are saying maybe the redskins should have safeguarded him, do you feel like the nats got a reprevious there? >> i think there was validation in that you can see how dangerous these injuries can be and how toufsh take care of your guys. i don't know if steven truly appreciates it. the feelings he had have subsided. now that baseball is geared back up again, he's able to focus

welcome back. it's 9:15. a lot of people shop sticker prices when buying a new car. you should also know how much it will cost you to maintain that car over the next few years. kelly blue book ranked the best 2013 models and alec joins us live from los angeles to break it all down. good morning. this is crucial information that frequently we don't even think about. how much is it going to cost to run the car during the next five years. tell me the criteria you all used. >> hey, tony, good morning. you are right. most consumers really pay attention to what they have to pay up front and don't consider the things that impact the five year cost to own. things like depreciation, fuel expenses, insurance,

maintenance cost, state fees, all of these things add together. >> did you also factor in -- i imagine some cars depreciate faster than other cars and the issue of fuel economy and all that. is that factored in as well? >> oh, absolutely, yeah. fuel economy. make a few base assumptions. fuel prices and what that looks like. one of the biggest which brings me to the first of three vehicles. the buick verano which was our category winner. it features best in class depreciation. up front cost $25,000-26,000. but once you factor in things like depreciation, cost of fuel, 30 miles per gallon, maintenance

and repairs, buick is among the most affordable to old. beating out audi a 3, et cetera. >> interesting. what other cars do you have there? >> we have a couple others to share with you. next up is the lexus gs which was redesigned. our luxury car category beating out mercedes benz, bmw 5 series. what helps to differentiate the lexus is class leading depreciation. lexus was the brand that we named as the best lux uroee brand in terms of depreciation. toyota and lexus have a story representation of how they hold their values over the long-term. the mazda cx 5 which represents mazda. and what helps to set aside the mazda cx 5 is it gets excellent

facebook made about $1.1 billion in profits in the u.s. last year and didn't pay one dime in taxes. the company is getting a refund of about -- wait for it -- $429 million. yeah. and it's all thanks to one tax deduction for executive stock options. the company gets to make deductions when employees cash in stock options. president obama is trying to get rid of similar tax loopholes but has never singled out facebook like he has with the oil and gas industry. >> just in time for tax season,

welcome back. russian scientists say they have proof of the meteor that exploded on friday. dozens of tiny rock fragments which are sitting on top of a frozen lake. that's the proof. much larger pieces of the meteor are submerged beneath the hole it created when it slammed into the earth. clean up from damage continues. lots of windows were shattered. russia's leading classified ads have been -- claiming to have meteorite fragments for sale. you knew that would happen. >> yeah. >> and a lot of people will buy them. >> they are valuable if it's the real deal. obviously, they are pretty rare. >> got cold this weekend. temperatures yesterday only up

to 34. windy. things look a little better today. the coldest was this morning. overnight lows teens and 22 at reagan national. one of our coldest mornings so far this month. we're gradually warming up. we're still in the 20s. 28 right now in washington at reagan national. 25 in annapolis. we have a couple 30s to the south and east. and 30 in cambridge. now 24 in martinsburg and 27 in winchester. winds yesterday blowing out of the north and west up to 40 today. the winds are going to lighten up. we have windchills early this morning. 18 is what it feels like. windchill values. make sure you are wearing layers if you are taking the dog out for a long walk or maybe the cat. 13 in gaithersburg. 16 in annapolis. winds are going to

the back. and browny is to the left. and then the latest is rocket. and he is from the maryland rescue. they just came to me. i can't help it. they look at you with those puppy eyes and they want to play and run. >> were they talking to you like please pick me? >> let's talk about why you love dog wills and then why sarah loves cats. >> i was actually afraid of dogs growing up. and i was given my dog my first dog zeek, rest in piece. was given to me. and i fell in love with him. became a constant companion . they are waiting for you. they can be goofy but they show that affection. if i'm going to have a pet, dog gone it. i want there to be like, you know some affection. that's all i'm

saying. >> so does that say something about allison's personality. >> am i needy? >> dogs do need to be walked. >> yes, there is a lot to be said about a person's personality based off of having a cat versus a dog. people who are dog lovers tend to be more social. and dogs are very social creatures. they need that social contact. whereas cats are more solitary. and isolate themselves and hunt alone. they don't need as much attention. >> in all seriousness and not you. because i love you. but could that be where the blank blank cat person comes from? cats are sort of to their own. you could be in a house with many of them. >> as you said, your dog waits for you to get to the door. my cat waits for me at the door. i come in and as soon as i sit down, he wants to sit on my lab.

oops i lost an earring. he sits on my lap and likes to be cuddled and crawled up. i think mine are a little different in that way. >> i have three cats and they are very much like dogs. waiting for me. nonstop social attention. very cuddly and a lot of fun. >> what causes us to think this way? i grew up with dogs. allison is a dog lover. what causes us to become so extreme for a pet? >> i wouldn't necessarily say extreme. i think it's more of a natural inclination to be something that is similar to you. if you are extroverted and social, you are going to be drawn to something like that. >> what if you like both? >> i had dogs growing up. >> the research grows your personality is going to be more in line with someone who is a dog lover.

so the main difference is if you are a cat lover and solely a cat lover versus a cat and dog lover. >> real quickly. give us fun statistics. >> i have fun statistics here. dog lovers are actually tend to be more conservative and republican and live more in suburbs and rural areas. a lot of that might be by coincidence. you can't have big dogs in the city. how many people can have a 50 pound dog in dc? >> the one about dog lovers and fashion. >> okay. so dog people consider themselves more fashion conscious. while cat people consider themselves more fashionably challenged. >> that's because we choose not to dress up our pets. live normal lives. >> let's look at our pet of the day. that's so interesting. thank you very much. you know us all well.

the programs you have throughout the year. >> we have three field trip programs here at the national center for white house history. the one we're here to talk about today is called forged by fire. dolley madison and the war in 1812 in commemoration of the bicentennial awar. >> and so we have all the costumes set up here hchlt tell me how the programs work. we have students in grades 3 through 6 who visit for this program. we dress them up in costumes. get to perform a play about dolley madison and what was happening around the white house. including her famed flight and the rescue of the portrait of george washington. you even get a dvd copy to take home. >> all right. let's talk about our actress here miss ana. did you want to play the role of

dolly madison? >> yes. >> why did you want to play the role? >> really cool first lady. she's kind of like a party girl and she brought ice cream to the white house. >> no, she didn't? >> yes. >> i can understand why i'd want to be her too. how did you go about researching the role and getting into character? >> well, we practiced beforehand at school and we got this little paper that sold us background knowledge. >> what did you learn? >> she helped save the portrait of george washington. >> that's pretty important. anything else? >> saved the portrait of george washington and brought ice cream. i'm not sure we need to remember anything else. by letting the kids become these historical figures that it really imprints on their brain

rough time a year. how has it gone so far? >> we launched at president obama's inauguration. it was an awesome launch event. great event to launch at. business has been good. >> that's funny because for the inauguration, not all the food trucks were out there. it was 19 trucks. >> we had to go through a strenuous application process. do background checks. had to go through a lot. we were lucky to be one of the chosen ones. >> you have one truck? >> yes. just the one truck. >> i understand the recipes are family recipes. >> yes, they are. they've been passed down from generation to generation. from there, it kept going. >> chicken and waffles. the first one i heard of was in la. when you hear about it you are like what? it does seem to go together. why do you think it works? >> i think it works because it's something sweet mixed with something that has salt in it.
